1974 saw the Bridgwater Borough Council change into the Bridgwater Town Council due to Government Legislation and the introduction of the Sedgemoor District Area

It also nearly saw the end of the Bridgwater Mayor as some thought it was a waste of Public Money, but after having a Special Council meeting it was decided that the town Mayor was a long old tradition and should be kept.

And it was Charles Tester who became the first Town Mayor of Bridgwater, his wife was one of the Last Borough Mayor's with John Saunders being the very last Borough Mayor.
